Metal Mario Trophy		 @IkaMusumeFan06: Because reflective effects are very, VERY processor heavy. Hard-mapping a reflected texture takes up much fewer resources than re-rendering the surroundings on the reflective surface. (This is why Fountain of Dreams has enough of a lagging problem in four-player matches to be banned in doubles tournaments.)
It's usually more than good enough; you probably never would have even noticed if not looking at the texture rip.

Metal Mario		 It's because reflections are very processor-heavy. (Just ask Fountain of Dreams.) Things like this are ways to still get a reflective look without having to, you know, render the objects it's reflecting.

Most coloring done in the game is done through RGB textures + the alpha channel is used for 2 purposes [the transparency is used as ambient occlusion texture + fully opaque pixels are used to separate areas that don't change color such as the pink of paws]

Vertex coloring is mainly used in environments [areas/dens] and multiplied with black/white detail textures. A couple pets use vertex coloring and some clothing/den items use it as a form of ambient occlusion or as simple coloring in addition to RGB textures
