Super Smash Bros. Ultimate		 So when adding the characters EFX on a folder, some other effects will be on that folder. For Example, On Mario's folder is his effects, but 1 of Corrin's Effects go with that folder.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate		 For what I found with Switch Toolbox, the effect textures are mapped to differently shaped models, which in turn distorts the texture to add the illusion that its a series of sprites. The models are translucent/transparent and blend with different blending modes to create stunning visuals.

Minecraft: Java Edition		 @Xband Well Alex was added long after Steve?'s texture changed, and Alex was added to have a different player model, hints the 3 pixel/voxel wide arms. Alex's skin was loosely based off an old render and by the point she was added I think it became pretty accepted that Steve? was male.
Also I will always look at the original texture to be a smile, never a beard.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate		 It might be something similar to a tool Blender has that can import 2D images into it. When you import a 2D image into Blender, the 2D image gets textured onto a flat 3D plane.

Hopefully this can explain it a little bit.
